Betty Edel was born into a Jewish family in Frankfurt on the Main on 8 February 1887. After her marriage to Moritz Groß, she initially lived with her husband in his hometown of Bromberg (Polish: Bydgoszcz), where the couple’s two sons Julius and Heinz were born in 1917 and 1919 respectively. Later, the family moved to Fürstenwalde and lived at Frankfurter Straße 18.
Betty was deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp and murdered there on 1 April 1942. Her husband Moritz and her son Julius fell victim to the terror system of the National Socialists too. Her younger son Heinz survived and emigrated to the United States in 1949. The family’s property at Frankfurter Straße 18 was forcibly expropriated by the city of Frankfurt (Oder) on 22 May 1942.
